Lourdes

We will start our day heading out from Toulouse towards Lourdes, embarking on a highly scenic 1-hour and 45-minute drive south as the flat plains gradually give way to the dramatic, snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees mountains. Upon arrival, we will stretch our legs and head straight into the heart of the global pilgrimage site: the massive Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. Take a leisurely stroll down the grand Esplanade toward the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Take time to enjoy the magnificent architecture of this Romano-Byzantine masterpiece, marveling at its sweeping, layered stone arches and the stunning mosaic windows that coat the interior walls in dazzling gold and vibrant colors. Right beside the basilica, we will walk beneath the rock face of the Grotto of Massabielle to see the quiet, candle-lit cavern and the miraculous natural spring flowing directly from the stone. After experiencing the deeply moving, peaceful atmosphere of the shrines, we will escape the bustling lower souvenir streets and make a short trip up the steep rocky promontory to the Château Fort de Lourdes. Take a walk around this gorgeous, thousand-year-old fortress, navigating its intact drawbridges, stone ramparts, and heavy watchtowers that once guarded the valleys below. Step out onto the castle’s high artillery platform to enjoy the stunning, panoramic views of the entire river valley, the sprawling white basilicas, and the dramatic mountain peaks rising sharply in the distance. Finally, we will head back down to the vehicle to conclude our journey into the mountains. The relaxing drive back to Toulouse is usually around 1.5 to 2 hours.
